The certification of sustainably managed forests and the evidence of timber from sustainable sources of origin have become an important issue in recent years. Overall, more than 70 percent of German total forest area is managed according to the criteria of independent certificates.

The most important certification systems in Germany are the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC, founded in 1993) and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes (PEFC, founded in 1999). Their certificates assure the consumer that the wood or paper product marked comes from raw materials from forests that are managed according to the rules of proper, responsible forestry.

PEFC is the most widespread certification system in Germany and in the world. In Germany about 7.3 million hectares are certified forest land (2011). Certified according to FSC are approximately 633,136 hectares (2011). For more information please have a look at the websites www.pefc.de and www.fsc-deutschland.de
