At the "International Day of Forests", specialists from forestry and financial management met at the Sparkassen Academy Castle Waldthausen in Mainz at the end of the anniversary year "300 years of sustainability." The development of sustainability as a guiding principle was in the foreground of the presentations and discussions. While the sustainable forestry of the last century rather had saving function for the family businesses the forest enterprises of today are more an interesting investment object. Whether it is the construction of wind turbines in the forest, afforestation for CO2 compensation or safe and profitable investments, both industries feel the public interest in terms of sustainability.
Sustainability requires crossing borders
The meeting in Waldthausen confirmed that the claim of sustainability does not allow stereotypes, fast answers to difficult questions. Rather, it is worthwhile to come together to talk, to change perspectives and exchange arguments. Such meetings and discussions should not be confined to the Jubilee year, but rather be a starting point to develop cross-sectoral sustainable solutions for the diverse needs of the future.
